TL;DR
  • Duration: 4 hours door to door, of which about 45 minutes are inside the fortress
  • Included: guide, transport between stops and entry fees. Lunch is normally not included
  • Best for: a first full morning in Puerto Plata, and for cruise passengers back on board by mid afternoon
  • Book ahead: 2 to 3 days, and pick the earliest departure the operator offers
  • Practical warning: the order matters more than the stops, because the fortress after noon is the hottest part of the day

Stop 2: Malecon walk (30 min)

Walk east along the seafront from the fortress to Parque Independencia. About 1.2 km of paved promenade with Atlantic views, food vendors and locals exercising.

Stop 3: Amber Museum (45 min)

Housed in an 1880s Victorian mansion on Calle Duarte. The collection includes amber pieces with insects, plants and even a small lizard fossilized 25 million years ago. The gift shop has decent larimar prices.

Stop 4: cathedral + Umbrella Street (15 min)

The Cathedral of San Felipe sits on Parque Independencia. Walk one block north to Calle del Sol (Umbrella Street) for the famous canopy of colored umbrellas overhead.

Stop 5: Brugal rum factory (60 min)

The original Brugal distillery is on the outskirts of Puerto Plata. A 45 minute guided tour covers sugarcane, fermentation, distillation and barrel aging, finishing with a tasting of three premium rums. Photo with the tasting bar is the standard shot.
