What is Fortaleza San Felipe?

Fortaleza San Felipe is a coral-stone Spanish colonial fortress built between 1564 and 1577 on a rocky outcrop at the western end of Puerto Plata. King Philip II of Spain ordered its construction to defend the new town and the silver shipping route from English and French pirates. It is the oldest European military building still standing in the Americas in continuous use.

Yes. It is the oldest European military structure still standing in the New World (built 1577) and the headline stop of any Puerto Plata city tour. The 360 degree views over the Atlantic and the Malecon promenade make it a must-see, even if the museum itself is small.
