About Fortaleza San Felipe

Fortaleza San Felipe is a 16th century Spanish colonial fortress built in 1577 on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Puerto Plata. It is the oldest European military structure still standing in the New World and houses a small museum with cannons, weapons and artefacts from colonial times. Sitting at the end of the Malecon promenade, it is the must-see landmark of any Puerto Plata city tour.
