Stop 1: Fortaleza San Felipe (45 min)

The 1577 Spanish fortress on the Atlantic. Start with the outer ramparts for the best ocean views, then the original cannons, the small museum and the Maximo Gomez cell. See the complete fortress guide.

Stop 2: Malecon walk (30 min)

Walk east along the seafront from the fortress to Parque Independencia. About 1.2 km of paved promenade with Atlantic views, food vendors and locals exercising.

Stop 3: Amber Museum (45 min)

Housed in an 1880s Victorian mansion on Calle Duarte. The collection includes amber pieces with insects, plants and even a small lizard fossilized 25 million years ago. The gift shop has decent larimar prices.

Stop 4: cathedral + Umbrella Street (15 min)

The Cathedral of San Felipe sits on Parque Independencia. Walk one block north to Calle del Sol (Umbrella Street) for the famous canopy of colored umbrellas overhead.

Stop 5: Brugal rum factory (60 min)

The original Brugal distillery is on the outskirts of Puerto Plata. A 45 minute guided tour covers sugarcane, fermentation, distillation and barrel aging, finishing with a tasting of three premium rums. Photo with the tasting bar is the standard shot.

  • Pick a morning slot to beat the heat and cruise crowds.

The standard guided city tour is 4 hours (half-day) and covers Fortaleza San Felipe, the Malecon, the Amber Museum, the historic centre and Brugal rum factory. Private and VIP versions extend to 5 to 6 hours by adding Mount Isabel de Torres or Playa Dorada.

The Fortaleza, Malecon, Amber Museum, cathedral and Umbrella Street are all walkable (about 1.5 km loop). Brugal rum factory and Mount Isabel de Torres need a car or shuttle.

Group city tours run $45 to $55 per person. Private city tours (max 6 to 8 people) run $80 to $120 per person. VIP customizable tours run $110 and up. All include English-speaking guide, hotel or cruise pickup, and entry fees.
