Fortaleza San Felipe History
A 16th-century stronghold
Construction began in 1564 and the fort was largely complete by 1577. Its thick coral-stone walls and strategic position at the harbour entrance protected the growing colonial town and its trade from frequent pirate raids along the north coast.
From fortress to museum
After its military years, the fort was used as a prison, including during the Trujillo era. Restored in the 20th century, it reopened as a museum. Walking its ramparts today, you can trace more than four centuries of Dominican and Caribbean history.
