Fortaleza San Felipe Puerto Plata

"The Fortaleza San Felipe was breathtaking. Walking the 16th century ramparts with the Atlantic on every side and learning how the fort guarded the harbor for centuries was fascinating. The small museum inside is well worth it. A must-do in Puerto Plata."

Fortaleza San Felipe is a 16th century Spanish fortress in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Built starting in 1577 to defend the harbor, it is the oldest standing military structure in the New World. Today it is a museum with original cannons, thick stone ramparts and sweeping views over the Atlantic. Inside you can see colonial artifacts and the cell where national hero Maximo Gomez was held.

Fortaleza San Felipe sits at the western end of the Puerto Plata Malecon, on the seafront point that guards the bay. From the city center it is a few minutes by taxi or a pleasant walk along the boardwalk. From Playa Dorada or Cofresi resorts it is about 10 to 15 minutes by car. Most cruise passengers and tour groups reach it as part of a Puerto Plata city tour.

Entry to the Fortaleza San Felipe grounds and museum costs around $2 to $3 per person. A guided Puerto Plata city tour that includes the fort, the Malecon and Umbrella Street starts from about $45 per person. Combos with the Mount Isabel de Torres cable car or the Amber Museum run a little higher.

Yes. Fortaleza San Felipe is a daytime tourist monument with on-site staff, bilingual signs and easy access. The ramparts have low railings, watch children near the edges. Take a guide if you want context on the cannons and Maximo Gomez cell.

Bring cash in Dominican pesos for the small entry fee, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and water. Shade on the ramparts is limited and the sun off the Atlantic is strong. Comfortable shoes help on the old stone steps. A camera is a must for the harbor and ocean views.

Nearby attractions include Playa Dorada beaches (10 min), Teleferico Puerto Plata cable car (20 min), Ocean World Adventure Park (25 min), Sosua beach (30 min), and Cabarete kitesurf town (35 min). Fortaleza San Felipe is the headline historic attraction of Puerto Plata, the oldest standing Spanish fort in the New World.

Fortaleza San Felipe is open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The best time to visit is on weekday mornings to avoid crowds. Weekends can get busy with local Dominican visitors.

The dry season from December to April offers the best weather and clear views over the Atlantic. Fortaleza San Felipe is open year-round. Arrive early in the morning for cooler temperatures and fewer visitors, and to beat the cruise groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
