Step 1: choose your transport

  • Walking: from central Puerto Plata, 15 to 20 minutes flat along the Malecon. Best at sunset.
  • Taxi: from town 250-400 RD$ ($4 to $7). From Playa Dorada 600-900 RD$ ($10 to $15). From Amber Cove or Taino Bay 1,200-1,800 RD$ ($20 to $30).
  • Hotel pickup: included in most Puerto Plata city tours.
  • Rental car: free parking outside the entrance.

Step 2: arrive on the right day

Open Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays. Cruise days (Amber Cove and Taino Bay schedules) bring big groups around 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Visit at opening (9 AM) or after 3 PM for the calmest experience.

Step 3: buy tickets at the gate

About 100 RD$ (USD 2-3) for adults, less for children and Dominican residents. Card payment is unreliable, carry small cash bills (USD or RD$ both accepted).

Step 4: decide on a guide

Independent guides wait at the gate. Around $5 to $10 for a 30 minute walk-through covering the cannons, the Maximo Gomez cell and the colonial history. Check that they speak English (or Spanish, French, Italian) before agreeing.

Step 5: visit in order

  1. Outer ramparts and Atlantic view (10 min)
  2. Original Spanish bronze cannons (5 min)
  3. Inner museum: weapons and navigation (15 min)
  4. Maximo Gomez cell (5 min)
  5. Photo loop on the western bastion at the Puerto Plata lighthouse (10 min)

Step 6: combine with the half-day loop

Walk the Malecon back to town. Stop at the Amber Museum and the cathedral on Parque Independencia. Add Brugal rum factory and Umbrella Street for a full half-day. Or book the combo as a guided city tour.
